Why Foot Type Matters
Every runner's foot is different. Some have high arches, others have flat feet, and many fall somewhere in between. The shoe that works perfectly for your friend might cause you pain and injury. That's why understanding your foot type is the first step to finding the right running shoe.
The Three Main Foot Types
1. Neutral (Medium Arch)
If you have a normal arch, your foot rolls slightly inward when you land. You're lucky — most running shoes are designed for you. Look for neutral cushioning shoes like the Nike Vomero, Asics Gel Nimbus, or Hoka Clifton.
2. Overpronation (Flat Feet / Low Arch)
Your foot rolls excessively inward. This can cause knee and hip pain over time. You need stability shoes that provide arch support and control motion. Try the Asics Kayano, Brooks Adrenaline GTS, or Hoka Arahi.
3. Supination (High Arch)
Your foot rolls outward, putting extra pressure on the outer edges. You need maximum cushioning for shock absorption. Consider Hoka Bondi, Nike Air Zoom, or Brooks Ghost.
The "Wet Test" — 30 Seconds to Know Your Type
- Wet the bottom of your foot
- Step on a piece of dark paper or cardboard
- Look at the imprint:
- Full footprint visible? → Flat feet (overpronation)
- Half the arch visible? → Normal arch (neutral)
- Only heel and forefoot visible? → High arch (supination)
What to Look For When Buying
- Fit: A thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the shoe's tip
- Weight: Lighter shoes for speed, heavier for long distances
- Terrain: Road, trail, or gym — each needs different outsoles
- Mileage: Replace running shoes every 500-800 km
